Kestrel HR shares its thoughts on hiring in the post-pandemic world.

2024 is proving to be one of those interesting years - again.

With the pandemic in the rear-view mirror, working habits look to be changing for good.

Many professionals have got used to 'working remotely', and technology is evolving to save hours and hours of wasted time on trains or the dreaded M25.

Now though, businesses are requesting, suggesting, and insisting on a return to presenteeism in the office. Sometimes just a day, but increasingly two or three days a week, with a little flexibility to WFH, normally on a Monday and/or a Friday.

Why is this important?

Well, there is a (whatever the collective noun for a bunch of talent is) bunch of world-class talent, living in and around Hitchin and North Herts. Many are fulfilled professionally and happy to commute, travel, & spend a small fortune in time and money getting to and from work.

There are also many who are still world-class in their capability and professionalism but could do without spending or throwing that time and money away.

For those who don't live in the world of commuting to London…

A travelcard from Hitchin to, say London Bridge, (not including any tube travel) is £505.80 a month. A Travelcard to include the tube is £628.00. If you wanted to buy an annual ticket to save a few quid, the travelcard (no tube) is £5268.00, and to include the tube is £6544. First Class is even more eye-watering.

Optimistically, allow an hour each way, so two hours a day, five days a week = 10 hours a week, or c40 hours a month.

When people talk about Work/Life balance, they are normally looking at two things… Time and money. There are few aspects of a personal budget which cost over £500 a month, and few pastimes which take up 40 hours a month.

If you're a commuter… imagine saving nearly £500 and having nearly 40 hours more time a month…, what would you do with that time and money?

If you're a local employer or business owner and you're looking for new talent to join your team, they may well be already nearby!

So why is it a race?

There's an old term used in recruitment… The War for Talent. Well, here at Kestrel HR, we think of it more as a race. Speed, engagement, and efficiency are crucial.
