Households in a North Hertfordshire village will pay the county's highest council tax bill for the coming year – coming in at almost £2,100 for the average home.

The average property in Ashwell, near Baldock, will pay £2090.91 in council tax for the upcoming year, almost £200 more than the lowest bill in the county.

North Hertfordshire's district council rate has risen by £5 to £245.13 for Band D properties, with a precept for parish councils pushing the bills to the top of the ranking.

The only town within the top 10 from another district is Ware, where residents will pay an average of £2,087.07.

For a Band D property in Ashwell, the rises equal £245.13 a year to the district council and £93.47 to the parish Council.

That is on top of £1,529.31 a year to Hertfordshire County Council (including the social care precept), and £223 to the Police and Crime Commissioners, which all properties pay.

The county council has increased their total share of tax by £58.68, while residents will pay an extra £10 to the police force.

District and county authorities can only increase their council tax by a maximum amount without a referendum – 2.99 per cent for upper tier authorities and 2 per cent or £5 for lower tier authorities – but parish councils can set their own tax for the year.

In its yearbook published this month, the parish council noted the increase would amount to 93p a year for a Band D taxpayer which would be used to improve its facilities.

This includes putting aside £2,300 for works needed to the war memorial, £2,000 to the pavilion and public toilets, and up to £1,000 in grants for community support.

Residents in Barkway, also in North Herts, will pay the second-highest amount of council tax with a bill that's just 5p lower, at a total cost of £2090.86 a year.

At the other end of ranking, residents in Broxbourne will pay the least of council tax on average.

Band D households in Broxbourne will pay an average of £1,900.55 a year – almost £200 less than those in parts of North Herts.

The borough council has the lowest rate of council tax at £148.24, and is unparished so avoids any extra precept on top.

Two areas in East Herts – Sacombe and Wyddial – are the next lowest at £1936.40 a year, followed by St Michael in St Albans district (£1941.67) and Ridge in Hertsmere (£1946.15).
