A number of jobs could be under threat after Sainsbury's revealed plans to shut the cafe in its Letchworth store.

The cafe in the Sainsbury's superstore branch at Third Avenue is due to close as early as April, following the supermarket giant announced plans to close at least 64 of its in-store cafés around the country, including Letchworth.

The move is set to put around 2,000 jobs at risk, with Sainsbury's also announcing that 34 of its hot food counters would also shut.

Simon Roberts, Sainsbury's CEO explained: "As we go through this period of transition, we have taken the difficult decision to close 200 of our cafes next month.

"We have spoken to all colleagues affected by these changes today and are absolutely committed to supporting them in any way we can during this uncertain time.

"Of course, we understand this is very unsettling for our colleagues, but we must keep adapting our business to make sure we are offering customers the best possible food and drink at affordable prices."

The closures come as part of new plans aimed at updating the eat-in, takeaway and home delivery sections. Sainsbury's says it hopes to open 30 new food halls' in 2022, as well as 30 Starbucks coffee shops within supermarkets.
