Candidates who are in the running to take seats on North Herts Council have been confirmed ahead of this year's local election.

One third of the seats in the district will need to be filled in 2023 – with votes taking place across 16 wards.

North Herts Council is made up of 49 members in total, and no one party has "overall control" of the authority.

Instead, power is shared between the Labour and Co-operative Group – with 15 councillors – and the Liberal Democrat Group – with 13.

There are 19 Conservative councillors in opposition, and two seats are vacant following the death of Labour's Judi Billing, who represented Hitchin Bearton, and non-attendance by Labour's Kay Tart, who represented Hitchin Walsworth.

The poll on Thursday, May 4 is the final one where voters in this district when will choose their representatives "by thirds".

From 2024, all seats will go up for election once every four years and the whole council will be chosen in one go.
