Letchworth GC 43-24 Fullerians: Legends win again to give Alex Lennon perfect send-off

LETCHWORTH GC 43-24 FULLERIANS

Sometimes rugby can be a beautiful as well as a brutal game and certainly Legends demonstrated in a pulsating first forty minutes an almost Gallic style that was a joy to watch.

The burly Fullerian forwards led by inspired No8 George Harvey, their go to man, must have been scratching their heads.

Despite more than 60 per cent possession and sustained periods of pressure on the home sides line, they had only a measly five pointer to show for their efforts on the stroke of half time.

Letchworth for their part had delivered five beauties and a bonus point and all this despite being at the end of some questionable refereeing decisions.

The answer to the Fullerian forwards dilemma was that the Letchworth counter attacking was deadly and in runners such as Gibbs, Gurere Johal and later on Waters linking with speedy forwards simply cut the hapless Watford side to pieces.

It looked for the first ten minutes as if Letchworth would be on the back foot as Fullers, conscious of their drubbing by HAC last week really took the game to Letchworth.

However on their first attack the ball was well taken by Conor Turner at the back ,who again impressed with his performance.

Some great interpassing between Mongston Fitts and Lennon saw Chris Gibbs skip over and Dan Duke added the conversion.

A few minutes later another incisive break by Mongston saw the ball pass between Wilcock and Turner and this time Arun Johal fastened on to the end of the move to make it 12/0.

Fullers we're not learning that to kick the ball loosely in the direction of speedy full back Chris Gibbs was not a good idea . He had already made several telling breaks and on this occasion interpassing with Gurere they made over 50 metres. Then Lennon took a hand sending burly Tommy Wilcock over for a third.

It was now getting feisty up front as Fullers pounded the Letchworth line but great defence kept them at bay.

Then from their own line speedy hands saw Arun Johal sprint over 80 metres to outstrip despairing tackles to score at the other end for his second and the bonus point.

Minutes later a great team try which saw the ball worked well across and up the field ended with skipper Fitts feeding Alex Lennon who plunged over to score a fifth in his final home appearance before leaving for Australia.

At 31/0 it seemed game over but the rhythm was disrupted by a somewhat harsh yellow to burly second rower Scott Quarmby and Fullers pressure paid with a try on the stroke of half time.

They added another just after the break but another great counter led by replacement Michael Waters whose mazy running often left everyone behind saw Mongston fix on to the ball and this time Gurere was the benefactor.

No sooner had Quarmby returned than Luke Campbell was carded for a tip tackle.

Fullers capitalised with another but in reality a bonus point was all they could hope for at this stage.

Waters again showed the visitors a clean pair of heels only to be brought down metres short of the line with no support.

However Gurere broke minutes later and shredded the defence and passed to Johal for his hat trick.

The final score came from the visitors who charged down a lazy clearance to give them a deserved bonus point but at the end of this lively contest they were still three scores adrift and Letchworth , deserved victors, stay third in the table.

Although several aspects of the game need some attention head coach Baz Basra was more than happy with his teams performance going into a mighty challenge away to league leaders HAC next weekend.

After the game Alex Lennon received his legends colours tie and a cap for his performances not only over this season but in previous years service to the club.
