Letchworth residents are being warned of a telephone scam that has been operating locally.

The offenders are cold calling victims over the phone and pretending to be from the Police fraud team.

The fake officer states that police have a male arrested with a cloned bank card and that this male had attempted to withdraw a large sum of money from the victims account.

The fake officer explains that there are genuine concerns that more money could be taken unlawfully from the victims account.

The victim is told that they need to attend the bank and to withdraw a large sum of money to prevent any fraudster removing the funds from the account, the fake Police Officer explains that Police will send a courier over to collect the money to be kept at a Police Station for safe keeping.

However, Herts Police tell Nub News: "Unfortunately this is a scam and its unlikely that once the cash is collect by the courier that the Injured party will not get the money back."

Please note that a genuine Police Officer would never ask for any money and if you are contacted in this manner please refuse any requests by the fake officer, hang up and contact Police on 101.
