Letchworth's talented and humble Bhuvanesh Ramnauth is off to Oxford University after support from his foster carers, Hitchin Boys School and Herts Virtual Leaning.

A talented care leaver from Letchworth is celebrating after starting a renowned Oxbridge course this term.

Outstanding student, Bhuvanesh Ramnauth passed the rigorous entry requirements and is all set to begin his course at Oxford University.

Bhuvanesh, 18, who will study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University, says this was all made possible thanks to the support and encouragement of his foster carers, Hitchin Boys' School and the Hertfordshire Virtual School.

Hertfordshire County Council's Virtual School is an online resource supporting the education of pupils in care in mainstream schools.

Bhuvanesh, from Letchworth Garden City explains: "When an 11-year-old child is dragged out of class to explain something, most think that it's mischievous behaviour like drawing a on a wall.

"However, in my exceptional case I had to explain why there were 20+ bruises and scars on my body, including knife cuts, burn marks and much more.

"Trying to comprehend I won't be going home that night, is something I still can't explain, this has happened not once but twice.

"I wish I could tell that child he would be going to Oxford University to study philosophy, politics and economics.

"HBS and the Virtual School, with their quality teachers, councillors and trained professionals understood the extent of my home situation and built a foundation of trust and care, so I could speak out about issues that I had at school and at home.

"They understood that without stable mental wellbeing, no child can really use the resources of a school."

Virtual schools constantly monitored how his home situation affected his school life, and put in place goals and tasks each term to improve.

This allowed Bhuvanesh to reflect and see where he was at or what was going wrong. More importantly, he had direct communication with a figure that could implement anything he felt was necessary.

This self-reflection led to him being a better independent learner, allowing him to find people to go to when he wanted to stretch himself academically.

"I am gifted with calm and collected foster carers that allowed me to explore whatever I was interested in," he said, adding: "Without judgement, as well as a base to learn how to function in a family environment.

"Their support, in combination with Hitchin Boys' School and the Virtual School, allowed me to reach Oxford, something I never thought I was capable of."

Bhuvanesh is one of 28 care leavers across Hertfordshire heading off to universities across the UK this academic year proving that being in care is no barrier to achievement.

The school supports young people to achieve in a variety of ways, including a week of outward-bound activities during the summer holidays, masterclasses in preparation for GCSE exams and a CV writing course with industry volunteers.

Councillor Teresa Heritage, Hertfordshire County Council's Executive Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: "This is a fantastic achievement [he] has worked extremely hard to get to university [and] is a wonderful accomplishment.

"We are so proud of our Hertfordshire Virtual School which has provided the expertise, support and passion to help our young people in care. I'd also like to pay tribute to our amazing foster carers whose love and guidance goes a long way to helping these young people to achieve their potential."

A total of 139 care leavers have graduated since 2009, with 77 students this year in full time attendance, and a further 26 already interested in applying next year.

All have been supported in their academic progress by a dedicated team who mentor them to ensure they are given every opportunity to achieve the very best they can.

In addition to academic support, the virtual school also provides careers advice and work experience for young people in care.

Hertfordshire County Council are desperately looking for more foster carers, particularly to look after older children.
