Over 1,000 jobs have been put at risk as the owner of Vauxhall has announced plans to close its factory in Luton.

Stellantis says it will shut the van-making centre and would add its electric van production to its plant in Ellesmere Port in a £50 million investment.

The decision has been reportedly been made in the "context" of the UK's rules designed to speed up the transition to electric vehicles (EV).

The government said the news was "encouraging to see Stellantis investing in the future of its Ellesmere Port plant" but added: "We know this will be a concerning time for the families of employees at Luton who may be affected."

The site is set to close in April, with "hundreds" of jobs to be transferred to the Cheshire site.

Consultations have begun with employees and unions.
