Residents will be forced to show ID to use Letchworth Recycling Centre from this week.

The change has been brought in by Herts County Council to prevent non-residents from using the recycling centre.

Letchworth Recycling Centre on Blackhorse Road will only be accessible to residents located within Herts, and will not be available for residents of Central Bedfordshire from Wednesday, November 1.

This includes a driving licence, a Council Tax bill, utility bill or a Hertfordshire bus pass. Without proof of residency, access to Letchworth and all other Hertfordshire Recycling Centres will be refused by members of staff.

It is understood high level discussions took place between HCC and Central Bedfordshire Council in a bid to prevent such draconian measures, but both parties failed to reach agreement.

According to Hertfordshire County Council (HCC), this change means that Hertfordshire residents will now not have to be funding the use of the recycling centre by non-residents of the county.

The decision comes after HCC announced earlier in the year that they would be embracing a policy restricting access to non-residents at Hertfordshire's network of 16 recycling centres.
