Rewind: Baldock's Charter Fair

The Baldock Charter Fair is held every year on the High Street in early October.

The event has been running more or less since 1199, when King John I granted the fairs its royal charter.

Prior to the Second World War all the rides were steam powered.

In the evocative vintage Edwardian black and white photograph, you can see a helter skelter and a big wheel.

People came from far and wide with all rides a penny a time, which included the roundabouts, coconut shies and toffee apples.
