On Sunday not even a deluge of rain could dampen the spirits of a record number of runners of all ages and abilities who took part in the Run Around the Garden race series.

Organised by the BID with support from North Herts Road Runners this very popular annual community event is a firm favourite in the town calendar.

There were superb performances in both the 5k and 1 mile races.

Callum Webb from Higham Harriers won both men's races with Oliver Warburton and Matt Sayers from North Herts Road Runners close behind in the 5k and Shahab Ahmed from NHRR and Elliott Jackson close behind in the mile.

In the women's races the same three ladies contested the prizes in both events. Kirstie Sharman from Higham Harriers was first in the 5k and second in the mile. Whilst Hannah Ridley from NRRR was second in the 5k and ran a storming race to win the mile.

Tracy Pitcairn came third in both.

However it was the community that stole the show with a whole host of fancy dress in both races. Best Before Café had a team of vegetables and the Brewery a beer bottle and opener.

In the fun run there were smiles all round with many of the children running as their special characters. It was also very fitting for the fun run when the sun finally came out on a very special day for Letchworth town centre and the community.

Race medals this year, sponsored by John O'Connor Grounds Maintenance, were made up of recycled paper and card. They are fully biodegradable with the ribbon made from plastic-free, biodegradable Tencel.

Plus, every medal has wildflower seeds embedded in it, so when runners have had enough of showing it off, they simply plant it in the ground and can grow wildflowers!

Richard Harbon, Letchworth Garden City BID Manager said: "Thank you to everyone who ran, cheered, marshalled and supported this event. Another great day for Letchworth. A big thanks has to go to all the businesses who helped make this such a good day."
