Pancake Day history

Legend has it on a Shrove Tuesday in the 14th century, a housewife in the village of Olney, in Buckinghamshire, was in the middle of frying pancakes when she heard the toll of the church bell summoning the congregation.

Anxious not to miss the service, she ran down the street, frying pan in hand, tossing her pancake to prevent it from burning.

In honour of that feat, while other countries celebrate Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, with exotic and extravagant festivals and parades, here in the UK, people race around towns and villages wielding frying pans while flipping pancakes.

The aim is to be the first to reach the finishing line after tossing the pancakes several times.

Our favourite Nub News pancake jokes:

How do you make a pancake smile? Butter him up

Did you hear about the angry pancake? He just flipped

Why was the boy scared of the pancake? It gave him the crêpes
