Letchworth GC 13 Colchester 51
On a bright autumnal afternoon Legends competed with their high flying visitors in all aspects of the game for over three quarters of this match.
The Colchester coach complemented Letchworth in giving his side a good tough workout . Probably the hardest faced to date this season.
Alas the same could not be said for the last seventeen or so minutes which more resembled a captains run for the visitors much to the dismay of the home crowd .
The first half was high octane and heady stuff from both sides with Letchworth starting far better than in previous weeks and really taking the ball to the visitors early on . A dramatic break by flanker Jack Askham saw a last ditch tackle preventing a near certain score . However from a lineout minutes later a much more in form Tom Lewis drove forward and released returning centre Rick Streets for a fine opening score . Sharp whose variety of kicks and general orchestration in the first half was monumental just pushed the conversion wide . Mention must also be made of the appearance of veteran second row Adam Amos as a last minute change who did not let his team mates down .
However Colchester soon laid down a marker when they pushed Letchworth back and their flying winger went over to level the scores as the kick went wide . Sharp pushed Legends onto the attack with a great 50/22 and then a penalty to the corner but Letchworth let several scoring chances slip before the Colchester full back who was always a dangerous runner set up another try . Sharp pulled back the score to 8/10 with a well struck penalty before a fine drive by the visitors pack saw them over for another try to make it 15/8 at half time .
However, it was clear in the opening minutes of the second half, that Letchworth were going to make a real fight of this. Will Titherington took the ball on and Sullivan -Warner showed real feistiness on the wing .
A well taken lineout saw several drives before burly prop Ben Wilkinson popped up in an outside channel to score a fine try and pull the scores back to 13/15 with the kick again failing .
However that was the best it got for Legends as from the restart a bungled clearance and minutes later a lost line out on their line saw them 25/13 behind .
However all was not lost at this stage as once more the home side attacked vigorously with Colchester desperately defending their line . Lewis , Walker and Robinson all came close with drives that just fell short but just as the home supporters were looking for a grandstand finish again the ball was coughed up for Colchester to go the length of the field to seal the game
That should have been enough but the last fifteen minutes read like a penny dreadful as the scores mounted to give a lopsided ending to what had at one stage looked like a well contested game … so maybe look at the crime section for the details …. As one of the management said ..you are better than this … Go again next week . !
Oundle await .
On a sweeter note the seconds had a stirring victory against Leighton Buzzard away 54/20 with scrum half and man of the match Tommy Robinson bagging four tries .
