Nestled in Howard Park, just at the junction of Norton Way South and Hillshott, sits Howard Garden Social Centre.

Letchworth: 70 years young - Howard Park marks seven decades at the heart of our town

Those behind the popular space say:

It's much loved and appreciated by its regular users and the many volunteers that help run it.

But it's a hidden gem - many of the thousands of people who come to Howard Park every year probably don't realise it's there.

But it is ... and it has been for 70 years now.

This centre for the older residents of Letchworth and the surrounding area was built in 1953. Built as a place to socialise, eat together, enjoy activities ... combat isolation and make new friendships in later life.

It's in a beautiful location looking out onto the garden and bowling green.

The centre held a celebration lunch last week - and funnily enough looking back in the @garden_city_collection archives, we can see that many celebration lunches have been held there over the years.

It has seen many sights - Christmas Fairs, Open Days, musicians, jubilee and coronation parties ... and The Worlds End film crew who filmed after dark around the centre just over a decade ago, making moments, at this local charity. Run by local people, for local people. For the last 70 years ... and hopefully 70 years to come.

If you want to find out more about the centre, and how you or one of your older relatives might be able to become part of the social club that meets there ... contact them on 01462 682524.
