Letchworth-based business' innovative net-zero Shefford classroom given industry recognition

A pioneering off-grid net-zero learning space for a Shefford school has been given national industry recognition.

As previously reported by Letchworth Nub News here Willmott Dixon's Now of Never pod, which uses 100 per cent renewable energy, was designed to provide additional classroom space as part of the Letchworth-based company's commitment to sustainability.

It was the brainchild of James Vosper, assistant supply chain co-ordinator, as part of the privately owned construction group's Foundation Trainee Challenge.

James, who lives near Shefford, said: "It is a fast, sustainable and convenient way to provide versatile space that can be both short-term and more permanent, and we can also re-use it again afterwards.

"It's ideal for 'pop-up' accommodation, including learning, and with more councils looking at community-related options for 'meanwhile' space, it's a fantastic net-zero solution that doesn't require connection to services."

The project was recognised by Construction News' Workforce Awards where it was shortlisted in the CSR Initiative of the Year category.

The pod, created for the Willmott Dixon built Pix Brook Academy in Stotfold, Central Bedfordshire, has eight 450w solar roof panels.

It is constructed from an existing timber frame and incorporates composite cladding manufactured from 90 per cent recycled material and insulation made from over 95 per cent recycled plastic and reclaimed fibres, which are re-manufactured as new carpet tiles. 

James said: "I'm thrilled that the pod was shortlisted for this award. It shows what's possible by pushing the boundaries of renewable technology and recycled material. We are already in talks with other parties about introducing the pods as a solution to their accommodation needs."

The pod's low-carbon credentials are further enhanced with a rainwater harvesting roofing system and furniture made from reclaimed ocean waste and plastic, while the foundations use recycled waste material from a nearby construction site.

The Workforce Awards event was at Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on Tuesday November 8.
