Letchworth: McColl's on Station Road closed due to revamp - find out opening date for change to Morrisons Daily

There was plenty of relief across our town when, as Letchworth Nub News reported, McColls in our town centre survived a raft of closures up and down the land.

Amid the sadness of 1,300 jobs at risk nationally following the decision to axe 132 McColl's, our Letchworth store survived the axe, after national retailer Morrison's bought a number of sites out of administration.

The one-stop store on Station Road, complete with friendly, helpful, hard-working staff lived to fight another day, as McColls new owner Morrisons started work integrating the convenience chain into its portfolio.

However, visitors to the site this week may have been surprised to note the store is currently closed.

McColl's said in a message to Letchworth customers: "We're giving your store a fresh look [and] re-opening with great Morrisons value on [Friday] January 19."

This is due to Morrisons converting most McColl's stores to their 'Daily' format after their takeover completed.

From McColl's to Morrisons

Residents are hoping that the site, situated at 73 Station Road, will continue to have a Post Office where people can send parcels, make payments including utility bills and purchase travel money - as well as offer a National Lottery terminal.

Joseph Sutton, Morrisons convenience, online and wholesale director, who has direct responsibility for McColl's explained the revamp, saying: "Over the last three years we have seen the significant enhancements that the conversion of a McColl's store to a Morrisons Daily can achieve, and so I am very pleased that we will now have over 1,000 Morrisons Daily stores trading within two years.

"I'm confident that the McColl's conversions, combined with the increased competitiveness that will be unlocked through investment and synergies, will make Morrisons a growing force in the important convenience market in the years to come."

Sutton added: "We have a great deal of work to do but there's no question that McColl's is a business with strong potential. I'm confident that the combination of McColl's conveniently located stores and great colleagues together with Morrisons' scale, brand, systems and fresh food expertise will lead to a transformation of the business.

He added: "I am confident that McColl's can, in the Morrisons family, once again become a growing, thriving and vibrant convenience business serving local communities across the UK."
