LETCHWORTH: We all remember gold postboxes during the glorious Olympic summer of 2012 - but pink ones?
That was the question asked by people in Letchworth town centre today, Wednesday [January 26].
As you can see from the photograph of the post box on Leys Avenue, our town's post boxes appear to have turned pink.
Why are Letchworth's post boxes pink?
The answer is not as exotic as we wanted - there's certainly been no rogue flamingoes painting our town pink!
The answer is far more prosaic. According to the Royal Mail, the pink colour is the undercoat that has been applied - and which needs to fully dry - before a brand new coat of bright red paint is used.
It also serves to protect post boxes from the weather before the red paint is used.
