World famous Welsh singer pays surprise visit to Letchworth Rugby Club as Legends Lane laps up brilliant performance
A world famous Welsh singer and comedian paid a surprise visit to Letchworth Rugby Club - and brought the house down.
Welsh icon Max Boyce attended Letchworth's centenary celebrations at Legends Lane this weekend - to rave reviews after an evening that will be talked about for a long time.
Legends chairman Brian Burke used his connections with the renowned entertainer - who jumped at the offer to visit the rugby that started way back in 1924.
Brian shared the tale with Letchworth Nub News, explaining with a smile: "For the start of the Letchworth Rugby Club's centenary celebrations I asked my good friend, Welsh singer and comedian Max Boyce, whether he could come and host an evening at the club - and the mighty man did not disappoint.
"For the capacity crowd that attended there was little doubt in their minds that this was one of the greatest nights held at Legends Lane - not only in recent years but in the entire history of North Herts senior club.
"The ages ranged from nonagenarians to current players - as well as a healthy sprinkling of Welsh exiles, who voiced their approval of the great man's jokes and rugby experiences.
"It was even more of an honour for Letchworth as this was his only engagement outside of the principality in what was his farewell tour."
Also in attendance Brian tells us, was John Wally Walters, former Letchworth skipper now living back in Wales, as well as ex chairman of Glynneath RFC, Peter Richards, where Max is both president and head groundsman - much to the delight of Letchworth's own ground keeper Digger Gardiner.
Brian continued: "For nearly an hour the legendary raconteur held the crowd enthralled with his passion and humour and then generously spent a good bit of time signing memorabilia and autographs for the assembled fans.
At the end of the evening, president Burke presented both Max and John with special centenary caps as a reminder of their visit to Legends Lane.
Brian added: "They said how impressed they were with the warm welcome they had received - as good as the welcomes from the Welsh hillsides and valleys."
And the verdict from the Letchworth faithful: Do come back again soon...
