YouTuber downs 4lb burger – with sides – to win county contest

A YouTuber who lists eating food quickly as a hobby is the new Hertfordshire Burger Eating Champion after downing a 4lb burger with sides in just half an hour.

Jack Squires, who is also a fitness fanatic and instructor, left the previous champion Paul Harris trailing in his mayo-splattered wake as the contest returned to a pub just up the A505 from Letchworth, after a pandemic-enforced break.

The Fox and Duck in Therfield, hosted the eating machine, who has previously taken on other food challenges around the country, helped the event to raise £500 for the Rooprai Spinal Trust, a Hertford-based charity that supports those affected by spinal injuries.

It took Jack just 30 minutes and 22 seconds, to eat a mammoth 4lb version of the Fox and Duck's Foxy Burger, served with oak-smoked cheddar inside bespoke buns made and donated by Tesco in Royston, plus chunky chips and salad.

Ivan Titmuss, landlord of The Fox and Duck, said: "I couldn't believe it. The burger is a beast and definitely not for the faint-hearted. But Jack made it look like a quick snack."

The Hertfordshire Burger Eating contest was started in 2018 by Ivan to raise money for charity. It has become a family day out with a bouncy castle, jazz band and a raffle to win five Foxy burgers for those not up to facing the 4lb monster.

"It all started out as a bit of fun," Ivan, the well-known landlord added, "but it has become a great event on the summer calendar and always attracts a lot of interest. We're glad that we were able to bring it back this year after a two-year break."

Jack won a £100 voucher to spend at The Fox and Duck. All the meat was donated by Ivan and photography for the day was provided by Danny Loo Photography, donated by Strand PR.
