Letchworth GC 67-22 Grasshoppers
On a wet and windy January day the Legends put on a mighty performance at Baldock road with another fine display of running rugby to delight the brave souls who turned up to watch.
In a game that contained fifteen tries there was always something exciting happening and despite being blown away in the first quarter the west London side stuck it out to score four tries themselves and thus earn a deserved bonus point.
However, it was Letchworth who must take the plaudits for their opening quarter going to plan.
They were nearly over in the first three minutes but a deliberate knock on kept them out. First yellow card against Hoppers and from the ensuing driving maul Harvey Howman nipped over for a try converted by Johal.
Moments later it seemed they were through again but another try saving infringement saw the referee reach for another yellow and as hapless Hoppers were down to thirteen legends made hay as speedy winger Gurure with two and Howman finishing off a great break by Arun Johal ratcheted the score to 26/0 after just fourteen minutes. Their fastest ever bonus point.
When Johal dotted down under the posts minutes later it seemed the floodgates that had already opened would continue to pour like the leak in the clubhouse that morning but in fairness the visitors rallied and although they couldn't score they did spend most of the second quarter in Letchworth's half.
After half time Grasshoppers at last got over the line for five points but any hopes of a recovery were to be brief.
The two Letchworth centres Titherington and Campbell had fine games as providers and produced good ball for another Johal try.
Grasshoppers scored their second before a dominant Letchworth pack achieved a penalty try and minutes later the score went to 50 as a brilliant backs move finished with Gurures hat trick.
The forwards then drove over for a try from the lineout whilst down at the other end a freak ricochet gave Grasshoppers their third.
The rain was now pouring down and spectators were most grateful for the 25 Tclubs gazebos to shelter under but the rain did not deter Legends as Arun Johal went over for another score.
Minutes later the same player was corner flagging back to make a superb tackle to prevent a certain try from the visitors who minutes later did score for their bonus point.
It was Letchworth who had the last say as following a drive Luke Mongston dived over to make it 67/22.
On a year to the day that saw the passing of that Legend of legends Graham "Boss " Walker his beloved first team did him proud with a large section of his family watching and brother Alan kindly supplying the team with beer after the match.
Indeed there is no doubt that the shades of all former Legends watching down through the clouds would have been delighted not only with the win but the stylish way that it had been achieved.
Visiting teams will indeed be wary when visiting fortress Legends Lane in the coming months but in the meantime Legends will be concentrating on a win on the road at Hemel Hempstead next week.
There will be a few absentees notably outstanding prop Richard Stokes who tore a bicep in the victory.
Fortunately others such as hooker Kyle Rambo Hughes who seem impervious to running through brick walls will carry on the battle at Camelot ( Hemel )
